Common Core Standards

Please take some time to view the new common core standards. Your child will be assessed on the New York State E.L.A and Math Assessments based on these standards.

*One of the most important updates to the standards in reading and writing is that your child will be asked to refer to the text when responding to literature.  We will refer to this as using "evidence" from the text to support an answer.  Students will be required to go back to the text and give examples, pull direct quotes from the text, determine the meaning of quotes pulled from the text, etc. when writing about literature.  We use the term F.U.N. when we ask the students to show where they found their evidence in the text.

F.U.N = Find it Underline it Number it

You can review the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy:

*One important update to the math standards will be teaching skills to mastery and fluency of math facts.  In Grade 3, instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100; (2) developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1); (3) developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area; and (4) describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes.
