New York State Assessments

English Language Arts Test Taking Strategies:

  • Good readers and test takers think while they are reading, as well as activating their schema (background knowledge) before they read
  • Good readers and test takers look for the directions, especially the action word, and follow them carefully
  • Good readers and test takers are always looking for clues that the author has included to determine what is important
  • Good readers and test takers ALWAYS reread many times during a text, even the best readers
  • Good readers and test takers study the genre and know "how" to read it
